Thanks to EQUANS, Liège University Hospital has adopted technologies that have enabled it to become an example of sustainability over time.
A hospital cannot do without electricity, heating, cooling and ventilation systems, etc. It even needs them in large quantities. This represents huge spending. And it is not without an impact on the environment. To reduce both, Liège University Hospital has placed its trust in EQUANS for nearly 20 years. This long-term partnership has enabled the different University Hospital institutions to be at the cutting edge of energy efficiency and follow the path of carbon neutrality.
Biomass, energy recovery and solar panels
For example? In 2009, the University Hospital and the University of Liège installed biomass cogeneration in the central boiler room. As a result, 12,000 tonnes of CO2 have been saved each year. Within the framework of an initial energy performance contract (EPC) with EQUANS, the hospital group has constantly pursued its efforts to optimise its energy consumption. Energy recovery systems have been installed for the HVAC systems, thermal solar panels now heat the hot water, the corridors and bedrooms have been relamped with LED technology, over 570 photovoltaic panels adorn the roofs of the Liège hospital network establishments, and more.
A new EPC for the Clinique des Bruyères
There’s no reason to stop here ! In 2020, Liège University Hospital extended the EPC that was signed in 2018 following a public tender. This is a 10-year contract during which EQUANS will manage the energy audit, building works and equipment maintenance (high-voltage cabin, backup generators, electricity supply, etc.), and now also for the Bruyères hospital as well. Among the work carried out was the installation of new gas boilers in place of oil ones. This will reduce heating consumption by 15% and significantly reduce the pollutants linked to the combustion of oil. A “turnkey” project where we are in charge of the design, construction, installation and maintenance. The whole should allow an increase of the output of 10%, a saving on the energy bill of about 90 000 €/year as well as an important reduction of the CO2 emissions.
Simple and sustainable technologies
EQUANS will or already has implemented other simple and sustainable technologies for Liège University Hospital. These include: night lighting that reduces in intensity on the Bruyères site; an innovative process that enables it to heat less water while ensuring it is not infected by legionella; pipe, valve and central heating circulator insulation, etc. EQUANS has also supported Liège University Hospital since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Providing, among other things, the technical facilities in the ‘Depist-car’ testing center in the parking lot of the Country Hall. For 20 years, EQUANS has ensured that all the Liège University Hospital and its entities’ equipment works flawlessly and meets technical, technological and climatological requirements while reducing its cost and guaranteeing patient comfort. A win-win contract.
