By installing a new LED lighting system at bpost, EQUANS is enhancing the well-being of staff and reducing the energy consumption of buildings by 51%.
Industrial lighting, but also the lighting of public and private buildings, is often a very significant component of the energy bill of a business or public body. To help its customers increase comfort while reducing their electricity consumption, EQUANS offers efficient relighting solutions that combine several advantages: minimum energy saving of 50%, greater long-term efficiency and a rapid return on investment.
What is relighting?
It all begins with a preliminary survey of the existing installations. On that basis, we assess the best way to optimise our customers’ lighting systems, in particular by incorporating LED technology. In practice, we take care of everything, including the selection of suppliers and the maintenance of the future installations. This is a turnkey solution that appealed to bpost in the context of its relighting project.
Towards a carbon neutral bpost
This is not the first time that EQUANS is supporting bpost in a low-carbon transition project. In the past, we had already installed solar panels on the bpost sorting centres in Charleroi, Liège, Antwerp and Ghent totalling 3.2 MW. Today, EQUANS is going further and is replacing the lighting of those same sorting centres while reducing the electricity consumption of those buildings by 51% and enhancing the comfort of their occupants.
7,500 LED bulbs
In total, this project involves the installation of over 7,500 LED bulbs over almost 170,000 m². The works will begin in February 2021 and last six months. The annual energy consumption relating to the lighting of the bpost sorting centres will eventually be reduced from 5.6 GWh to 2.8 GWh, which is a CO2 emissions reduction of 1,000 tonnes per year. We also note that bpost will see a return on investment in less than four years.
Financing options
In addition to bpost, there are also Proximus, Stora Enso and Katoen Natie… Irrespective of the sector they are in, increasing numbers of customers are entrusting their sustainable lighting project to our teams. And they are doing so for good reason. As a leader in the relighting of businesses in Belgium, our goal is to relight a surface area of 8,100,000 m² within seven years, which is the equivalent of the surface area of 3,000 Olympic swimming pools. To achieve this, we also offer our customers options for the financing of their projects. This is an ‘as a service’ solution that aims to facilitate the energy refurbishment of their buildings and speed up their transition towards low carbon.
