Our teams are completing their installation works at the new Jules Bordet Institute in Anderlecht for delivery in September. It should then be ready to welcome its first patients in November.
Screening, clinical treatment, research and teaching activities: this public university hospital is also a benchmark centre in Europe in the fight against cancer. With its great experience in healthcare, EQUANS took charge of the electrical installation, lighting, access control and IT and telecoms infrastructure for this new 80,000 m² hospital facility.
Comfort and security
With its 250 hospital beds, operating unit, radiotherapy bunkers and research laboratories, the new building is arranged around a central axis which serves and structures all the building’s flows over its 9 floors. Everything has been considered to guarantee patient safety and the availability of critical equipment: uninterrupted power supply (UPS), power generators, backup network, etc. An access control and video surveillance system also guarantees the security of the premises.
Interconnected
Today, everything in a hospital is interconnected. “These are no longer ‘simple’ electricity installation works”, explains Rudy Renard, Jules Bordet project manager at EQUANS. “The power has moved from the electricity network to the data network – this is the greatest development of the last 15 years.”
To enable the staff to be in permanent contact at the four corners of the hospital, we have developed an efficient communication system in close collaboration with the TPF design office. Each bedroom is equipped with a ‘Bedside’ terminal, a sort of board computer that provides access to the Internet, digital radio or TV, as well as the telephone (via the SIP protocol). Sound, videophone and intercom systems also offer a comfortable work environment to all the staff.
Energy savings
In terms of lighting, our teams have placed more than 16,000 LED luminaires connected to a smart management system, to reduce consumption as far as possible. Presence sensors, timetable programming, automated management… “We have ensured that the adjustment of light installations adapts perfectly to the use and occupation of the premises”, says Rudy Renard. Other systems have also been installed to guarantee energy savings: “The whole building has been equipped with blinds managed by two probes on the roof with wind sensors”, he adds.
Cutting edge
For the Jules Bordet Institute to be connected to a reliable and resilient IT network, the EQUANS teams also put in place a cutting edge computer room: iced water network, air-conditioning cabinets (In-Row), cold batteries, ventilators… “Just like for other installations, each item of equipment in the computer room was carefully chosen to reduce energy consumption”, explains Rudy Renard.
Hospital of the future
Thanks to this new infrastructure, the Jules Bordet Institute intends to treat a growing number of patients with increasingly efficient technology. By teaming up with the Université libre de Bruxelles, the Erasmus Hospital and the hospitals of the I.R.I.S. network, it aims to create a vast cancer centre in Brussels. Convinced that the hospitals of the future will have a crucial role in tomorrow’s society, we are pleased to have had the opportunity to bring our healthcare expertise into this significant project to fight cancer on a Belgian and international scale.
