From outdated installations to future-proof cooling
Cornby, a meat processing company that is part of Imperial Meat Products, faced a strategic challenge: modernising the ageing cooling systems in its Ghent production site without affecting output or product quality. Equans supported the transition to a sustainable and efficient NH₃ installation, fully aligned with the strictest standards and the operational requirements of the food industry.
Challenge: making outdated cooling more sustainable
Cornby needed to replace its ageing freon installations from the 1970s to comply with stricter environmental and safety standards. In addition, the phase-out of F-gases required a forward-looking solution. At the same time, production continuity had to be fully safeguarded, with no risk to product quality.
Solution: an integrated NH₃ cooling strategy
Equans developed a comprehensive master plan for the phased replacement of the existing installations. In close coordination with both local and international management, we explored several scenarios to secure the right balance between technical performance and investment cost. Thanks to our sector expertise and strong project approach, we implemented a state-of-the-art NH₃ installation, combined with temporary solutions to avoid production downtime.
Result: efficient and sustainable production
The new installation significantly reduces CO₂ emissions and increases energy efficiency. Cornby benefits from a reliable cooling system with lower operating costs and maximum heat recovery through heat pump technology. Production was maintained throughout the entire transition.
“At the start of this project, Equans had already completed a large part of the engineering, allowing the on-site works to move forward quickly. Everyone at Equans acted with the highest level of professionalism.”

Frequently asked questions about phasing out synthetic refrigerants
Do you have questions about our natural refrigerants solutions & phasing out synthetic refrigerants? We're here to make everything clear and easy to understand.
Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?
NH₃ (ammonia) is a natural refrigerant with a very low environmental impact and excellent thermodynamic properties. It delivers higher efficiency than traditional refrigerants, resulting in lower energy costs. In addition, it complies with the most stringent future regulations.
A phased approach and temporary cooling solutions are essential to ensure continuity. By developing scenarios in advance, risks can be significantly reduced. Experience in project management and industrial processes is crucial in this context.
Regulations on F-gases require companies to switch to more sustainable alternatives. This can have a significant impact on existing installations and maintenance costs. Investing in time helps prevent operational risks and unexpected expenses.
Modern systems are far more efficient and consume less energy for the same cooling capacity. Integrating heat recovery can generate additional savings. This reduces both the energy bill and CO₂ emissions.
Yes. When correctly designed and maintained, an NH₃ installation meets the highest safety standards. Modern systems are equipped with advanced detection and protection mechanisms. Professional engineering and monitoring are essential.
This requires a thorough analysis of your processes, energy needs and future plans. Different scenarios must be evaluated from both a technical and financial perspective. An experienced partner like Equans helps you make the best long-term choice.
Although the initial investment may be higher, lower energy and maintenance costs ensure a fast payback period. You also avoid costs related to future regulations. Greater reliability further contributes to operational continuity.
