Equans supports scale-up with a low CO₂ footprint
To accelerate the energy transition, Agfa invested in a new production unit for membranes that are essential to green hydrogen production. This strategic expansion needed to be scalable, while maximising energy efficiency and CO₂ reduction. For the electrical and HVAC fit-out, Agfa turned to Equans. Thanks to our integrated approach, the site now contributes to a significant reduction in emissions across the hydrogen value chain.
Scaling up with minimal environmental impact
Agfa faced the challenge of significantly scaling up the production of hydrogen membranes without letting energy consumption or CO₂ emissions spiral. The installation had to meet strict quality and environmental requirements, with high expectations in terms of process control, reliability and energy efficiency. At the same time, fast delivery was crucial to respond in time to the rapidly growing market for green hydrogen production.
Integrated electrical & instrumentation partnership, from design to handover
Equans took full responsibility for the electrical and HVAC fit-out of the new production unit. From energy-efficient HVAC control and process installations to automation, panel building and cabling: everything was designed and implemented as one integrated solution. Through smart sizing, accurate power distribution and optimised process control, Equans helps structurally reduce energy use and avoid losses across the entire production chain.
Lower CO₂, higher energy efficiency
The new production unit makes it possible to produce membranes each year for around 20 GW of green hydrogen production. Compared to grey hydrogen, this represents a potential CO₂ reduction of approximately 20 million tonnes per year. Thanks to energy-efficient installations and robust automation, Agfa also increases operational reliability and structurally reduces its energy intensity.
