Equans Belux’ FIA Smart Driving Challenge reduces climate impact of journeys by 9%
As companies seek to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and make their mobility more sustainable, Equans Belux shows that a change in driving behaviour can make a real difference. As part of its dedicated FIA Smart Driving Challenge 2026, 210 Equans Belux employees reduced the climate impact of their car journeys by 9%*¹. Based on a comparison with average driving, this represents an estimate of around 5 tonnes of CO₂e emissions avoided*², equivalent to around 31,000 kilometres driven by an average vehicle, almost three quarters of the way around the world. Safety was maintained throughout the entire challenge.
*1 The percentage of battery usage or CO2 reduction is calculated based on Greater Than’s AI technology. The data of each trip is analysed and transformed into a unique DriverDNA profile that is then compared to a database of over 7 billion DriverDNA profiles to evaluate the climate impact reduction.
*2 Estimations of CO2e emissions avoided are based on average Defra conversion factors where the vehicle make/model is unknown.
More sustainable and safer on the road
Today, companies face a threefold challenge: strengthening their resilience in the face of volatile fuel prices, making their mobility more sustainable and improving road safety. With the FIA Smart Driving Challenge (FIA SDC), Equans Belux demonstrates that these three objectives go hand in hand. From 1 June to 31 August 2026, 15,300 journeys and around 352,000 kilometres travelled by 210 employees were analysed. Through the FIA SDC app, participants received real-time feedback on their driving behaviour and were encouraged to drive in a more eco-friendly and safer way.
The FIA SDC, led by the FIA and powered by Greater Than’s AI technology, is easy to access: drivers download the FIA SDC app and connect it to their vehicle via Bluetooth to measure and improve their safety and sustainability performance. Data is strictly protected.
Acceleration, braking behaviour, speed and anticipation in traffic are analysed and translated into a personal score. This continuous feedback encourages lasting behavioural change.
During Equans Belux’ FIA Smart Driving Challenge, employees improved their efficiency and safety behind the wheel compared to a previous eco-driving challenge organised by Equans Belux in 2025. By adapting their driving style, they reduced the climate impact of their journeys by 9%, compared with 7% last year. This is estimated to equate to around 5 tonnes of CO₂e emissions avoided compared with average driving. Road safety was the second pillar of the challenge. Using the FIA Driver Safety Index, which enables companies to benchmark their driver risk score against a baseline, participants’ average score reflected a lower level of risk than the European baseline throughout the challenge, a clear sign of strong driver safety awareness.
“The challenge made me reflect on the impact of small habits behind the wheel. By anticipating more and driving more smoothly, I got more out of every journey. The competitive element was motivating, but what stays with me most is that safe and sustainable driving go perfectly together. And with energy costs continuing to rise, every adjustment counts”, said Julien Groutars, one of the winners of Equans Belux’s edition of the FIA SDC 2026.
“In a context of volatile fuel prices, the fastest lever costs nothing: adapting the way we drive,” said Thibault d’Ursel, Head of Sustainability at Equans Belux. “Less fuel, fewer emissions, fewer crashes. The FIA Smart Driving Challenge proves that resilience starts behind the wheel.”
Participating in the FIA SDC is part of Equans Belux’s broader ambition for sustainable mobility. Alongside investments in the decarbonisation of its fleet, Equans Belux focuses on awareness-raising and on safe, responsible mobility.
“Being a smart driver takes dedication and a willingness to improve on every journey, and that’s exactly what everyone at Equans Belux has demonstrated through this special edition of the FIA Smart Driving Challenge”, said Willem Groenewald, FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility, Sustainability and Tourism. “The commitment shown to becoming safer and more sustainable behind the wheel is helping us improve outcomes for road users and the planet at scale.”
